About The Artwork

Monoprint paint on archival rag print paper with charcoal and pastel accents. Glazed with a high-gloss protective glaze. Print size: 12 X 16 inches. Paper size: 14 X 19 inches. Artwork is signed and dated on outside edge of monoprint image. My process for creating a monoprint is a very long and labor intensive procedure. First, I begin with a piece of plexiglass which has had a light rubbing of sandpaper so as to release the paint when I print. Then, I apply several coats of special monoprint paint which is designed to dry and then re-release upon becoming wet again. I spend a lot of time playing with these coats of paint in order to get just the right design I desire. When ready to print, I soak a piece rag print paper in water for 15 minutes to soften the paper and prepare it to receive the paint. Then, as carefully as possible I lay the paper down on the prepared and painted plexiglass (many times it does not center perfectly, but this will not matter when the piece is matted). After this, I burnish the paper with a lot of elbow grease, having to rewet it several times to make the transfer. Pulling the print from the plexiglass is tricky and I have ripped many prints along the way either at this point or any other! When finally dry, I then apply pastel and/or charcoal depending upon what the monoprint tells me it needs:-) When I finally have the image I desire, I spray the print several times with a fixer to protect and lock together the paint/pastel/charcoal. Finally, after a few days to insure that it is utterly dry, I apply on the rearside of the print a protective coat of acrylic matt gel to protect the paper from the varnish leeching through. The last step then is to apply several coats of either matt or semi-gloss or gloss varnish until the entire piece is perfected Two monoprints from my monoprint series were featured on the set-design, emmy award winning, 'Hell's Kitchen' Season 8. In turn, they were then purchased by the show to be in its permanent collection (not this one, but two others:-) Additionally, several monoprints were just purchased to be featured on 'Hell's Kitchen' Season 13 & 14

Greetings and thank you for looking at my work! My name is Wendy Sue Morris and I have been a working Abstract Expressionist painter for over twenty years. After receiving my Bachelor's of Fine Art degree at San Diego State University, I relocated to Los Angeles where I participated in many group and solo shows, received a highly-competitive Kittredge Grant, had several of my paintings included in the set-design, emmy award-winning television shows, "Hell's Kitchen" and "Master Chef", and also had my mixed-media archival prints accepted into the prestigious Cedars Sinai art collection. Currently, I now reside in Phoenix, Arizona. Please feel free to check out my artist's website as well as my artist statement below which explains a bit more about my work. ARTIST STATEMENT I am in pursuit of a visual solution which will best express the intangible realities lurking behind the human form. My desire as a painter is to capture what it is about us as human beings which makes us complicated and unique"”namely our fragility. Therefore, in all my work realistic depictions of the human figure have been stretched and dismantled in order to portray suggestions of what lies behind the tangible. In this way, my paintings endeavor to pay homage to Abstract Expressionists such as Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky and Lee Krasner. However, ultimately my aim is to modify previous styles of figurative abstraction so that contemporary complexities are acknowledged. www.wsmorrisstudio.com www.facebook.com/wsmorrisstudio
