This work is part of a series of paintings of a styrene head in a variety of settings where it would not normally be found. The neutral expression of the head allows the viewer to impose their own impression of what the head might be thinking. Although is is not human, it resembles us, and therefore is a stand-in for the feelings we experience as we negotiate the world. The setting is a real place, a rural road leading to a landfill site. The NO EXIT sign was the spark that inspired me to make a painting that would depict a moment when all hope seems to be lost. And yet the hot air balloons in the distance seem to imply that escape is possible, and something better may lie beyond the horizon. Ultimately, the painting is about not giving into despair in spite of all indications to the contrary. The colours are of a summer's evening: blue, pink, green, and russet. The painting continues onto the sides of the canvas, so while it may be framed, it may also be hung as-is, by the hanger fixed to the back.
