About The Artwork
I am always looking for new ways to present the portrait - the head. The traditional sheet-with-holes-cut-out-Ghost costume is iconic to me. It is at once humorous, mysterious and sad. The challenge was, how to make an expressive portrait when the head is covered? Can it be done? The style is a thick impasto on a rough linen, inspired by Francisco de Goya's ''pintura negra''. "Nowhere Girl" is painted with thick, textured oil paint on heavy weave, stretched linen. The signature is on the back of the painting. It is unframed but ready to hang. It will come carefully wrapped and packed in a box.

Hayes' work can be found in private and public collections, such as the Art Bank of the Canada Council, Loto Quebec, La Grande Bibliothèque du Québec and the Musée du Québec. Hayes lives and works in Montreal.
