About The Artwork

The piece was painted for the show Finding the Nest; Self-Identity and Otherness is to communicate through the language of drawing and painting the perceived disparity in identity brought on by adaptation to Canadian norms and realities. My series of figures and self-portraits place me in nearly comfortable positions which go on to reveal the adequacy of the placement. These fittings serve as a metaphor of adjustment, dualism, and the evolution of my Polish-Canadian identity. The works also relate to the ambiguous relationship between otherness and the new for me multicultural “worlds”. Through satisfying, as well impairing my otherness, I find the liberties and the limits of nesting in frames of Canadian realities. The paintings contain symbols of attachments and place, very often an image of a chair. I use the likeness of my body as the subject and the medium in these tests of cultural resilience. Skin and changing colors stand for process of adaptation, the pose emulates injection to gain immunity to this sort of struggles.

I was born in Poland. Upon my arrival to Guelph, Canada in 1996 I decided not to continue scientific career in Biological Sciences but to pursue art and painting. My work has been progressing from expressive realism to abstract interpretation. Throughout my career I has developed a passion for the depiction of bodies, landscapes and other natural forms such as coral reefs, flames and plants. My recent abstract work focuses on depicting the female form engulfed in an orgy of color and gesture.
