The nymph Eurydice was Orpheus' wife. After she was killed by a snake bite while fleeing Aristaios, Orpheus descended into the underworld and tried to move the god Hades and Persephone with his song to restore his beloved to him. This was approved with the restriction that he should not turn to her on the way to the upper world. When Orpheus looked around for her out of concern, she sank back into the underworld. Distraught by this loss, he now decided to turn away from women and turn to boy love. Then he was torn apart by the maenads. Orpheus' head was thrown with his lyre in the Hebros and then washed up on the island of Lesbos. Greek mythology is full of stories that tell us more than just wonderful fairy tales. In some of them, we surprisingly recognize ourselves. The figures rarely act on their own initiative, but some are perfect models...

The Dutch painter Catharina de Rijke lives in the Rhineland and works in Cologne, Leverkusen, Berlin and Brussels. She studied design in Delft and art history in Paris, graduating in 1981. Of course, the painter who was born on the coast loves the sea and the vastness of space, and many of her paintings revolve around the relationship between water and land. Light plays an important role in your work. Here, too, your pictures are site- and moment-related reflections on reality. Her landscapes also have a poetic character due to the unusual application of paint, and their balance of stillness and movement invites inner contemplation. Her works are represented in the Schirmer collection, Museum Jülich, as well as in private collections in Belgium, Germany, France, Kuwait, the Netherlands and the USA.
