About The Artwork

The second painting in my latest series is entitled Philosopher King \Black thought\immediate knowledge\immediate knowledge\ immediate knowledge. This work was done using a freestyle abstract art approach. This involves applying paint and colour without any premeditated thought towards the outcome of the artwork. I use the technique I define as auto abstract Expressionism, which emanates from an emotional subconscious core. I like to combine text with images in order to layer meaning on top of itself. The painting Black thought... came about through the auto abstraction technique, while the text came via a poem by the poet Rumi Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī . The poem entitled immediate knowledge reads as follows: Come, recognize that your sensation and imagination and understanding are like the Reed cane on which children ride. The spiritual man's knowledge bears him aloft; the sensual man's knowledge is a burden. God hath said, like an ass laden with books: heavy is the knowledge that is not inspired by him; but if you carry it for no selfish ends, the load will be lifted and you will feel the light. How can you become free without the wine of him, oh you who are content with the sign of him? From attribute and name what is born? Fantasy; but fantasy shows the way to truth. Do you know any name without a reality? Or have you ever plucked a rose from the R.O.S.E? You have pronounced the name: go, seek the thing named. The moon is in the sky, not in the water. Would you rise beyond name and letter, make yourself entirely pure, and behold in your own heart all the knowledge of the profits, without book, without learning, without preceptor. This poem comes from the book entitled selected poems of Rumi translated from the Persian by Reynolds A.Nicholson. Rumi's poem helped me recognize the true knowledge lies within. Black thoughts are human thoughts at times coloured by racism. * The maroons of Jamaica - PortCities: Bristol The Maroons were escaped slaves. They ran away from their Spanish-owned plantations when the British took the Caribbean island of Jamaica from Spain in 1655. The word maroon comes from the Spanish word 'cimarrones', which meant 'mountaineers'.

*Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (Persian: جلالالدین محمد رومی‎), also known as Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī (جلالالدین محمد بلخى), Mawlānā (مولانا, "our master"), Mevlânâ, Mevlevî (مولوی Mawlawī, "my master"), and more popularly simply as Rūmī (1207 – 17 December 1273), was a 13th-century Persian[1][8] poet, jurist, Islamic scholar, theologian, and Sufi mystic.[9] Rumi's influence transcends national borders and ethnic divisions: Iranians, Tajiks, Turkish, Greeks, Pashtuns, other Central Asian Muslims, and the Muslims of South Asia have greatly appreciated his spiritual legacy for the past seven centuries.[10] His poems have been widely translated into many of the world's languages and transposed into various formats. Rumi has been described as the "most popular poet"[11] and the "best selling poet" in the United States.[12][13] Wikipedia
