A multicoloured grid of 2cm squares of oil colour applied by palette knife. The matrix of square panels is registered centrally on the canvas. Inspired by colour test patterns and confetti. In different conditions different patterns emerge based on like colours and tones. The creation of this canvas is in fact completely random using a palette of over 40 colours. I am interested in the relationship between art and manufacturing, the point at which an object ceases to be a limited edition or multiple and becomes a product. In the production of this process painting the only rule followed is that no like colour has been applied in adjacent panels. Like a manufactured product the canvas is filled in accordance with a repeatable process. Unlike a manufactured product this is unique and hand made. Made up of hundreds of carefully applied squares of contrasting colour blocking this vibrant piece features highly detailed transitions from blue to red to green and yellow etc which viewed from a distance merge into other colours. Inspired by Gerhard Richter's process paintings this abstract work made with oil paint and pallet knife balances vivid colours to create a harmonious whole composition with a contemporary, modern feel. The surface is highly textured with lots of relief coming from the gestural repeated action of building up the paint in each colour block against the still wet paint from the neighbouring colours. From differing angles different colours become dominant or fade away making this a piece that is continually changing based on the type of light, weather and viewpoint. The full spectrum of colours is used and preparation for completing a piece like this involves laborious mixing of the many colours that will subsequently be applied to the canvas to ensure that each colour is highly saturated and pure. Part of the pleasure of this series of pieces is the texture of the paint with its buttery smooth surface sometimes pulled into peaks by the knife. A sort of patchwork effect is seen which adds an extra dimension to the rich and varied colours. This canvas will suit simple minimalist interiors well contrasting with surrounding simplicity, it will equally bring another layer of depth and a rainbow of colour to a more luxurious or maximalist interior that features many different surfaces and textures. Random gatherings of shapes, marks and colours like this often induce in the viewer a phenomenon called pareidolia. The viewer may see all kinds of images concealed and revealed within the image and believe that there are patterns, animals, faces, symbols etc. Viewers of these pieces often ask me why I chose to embed the image of a given celebrity, cartoon or video game character or other symbol or subject. This piece is shipped unframed, wired and ready to hang.

I've explored many subjects over my thirty year practice but my current focus centres around multi-panelled pieces inspired by the mechanics of slide puzzles. In these palimpsest works, I apply multiple layers of images, marks and patterns so that they occupy the same composition but in different states, allowing images and motifs to undergo a transformative process between each layer. This method becomes a metaphor for exploring the intricacies of incompatibility or inevitability and can be disconcertingly jarring or consistently reaffirming dependent upon the work. The deliberate scattering and breaking of images, motifs and symbols allows me to explore many different ideas within a single compositional style and is, for me as an artist, a breakthrough in addressing the disorder and confusion I see in myself and the world around me. Alongside the multi-panelled pieces, I engage in the abstraction of complex subjects in my paintings. By deliberately introducing complexity and then allowing it to evolve into abstraction through the reductive process of painting, I seek to evoke pareidolic reactions from viewers — a reminder of our innate human tendency to find meaning in the seemingly abstract and unfamiliar.
