Subject: The painting depicts the Mercado Central de Atarazanas, designed by architect Joaquín de Rucoba in the late 19th century, and built on the site of a former naval workshop and shipyard dating back to the Nasrid era. The painting features the 108-panel stained glass window created by the Atienza brothers in 1973. Description: This painting of Málaga’s central market expertly juxtaposes saturated colors and carefully rendered detail of the building structure with vague shapes and muted colors of the crowd inhabiting it in order to convey the relative timelessness and majesty of architecture against the trivial and passing lives of the humans who both create and inhabit it. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in the studio.
