Quicksilver Girl Painting

I run a weekly life drawing group in Sydney at Scratch Art Space, an Artist Run Initiative I founded in Sydney. I look for a vulnerable yet strong energy from my models. They need to give a part of themselves and I find models that have trained in theatre, or who are performance artists have the ability to inhabit an emotive part of themselves when they move into a pose. This model Alicia, studied theatre studies in Sydney. She has a very centred energy with a beautiful balance of vulnerability. The poses in the sessions are generally 20 mins so I work on a small scale to capture as much as I can in a kind of drawing shorthand. I then take the drawings into my studio and continue to work on them. The next step is the selection of drawings that have an energy I want to develop through paint. This step of the process involves a certain amount of projection on my part so the paintings aren't portraits they more a synthesis of the model's energy mixed with my working thoughts and concepts.
