About The Artwork

Scarecrow hung on barbed wire fence in foreground of rainbow. I painted this work in honor of Matthew Shepard and all the other LGBT people who have been abused, harmed, bullied, killed and discriminated against through time. As with my other painting, Follow Me My Fascist Friends Into The Age Of Ignorance, I didn’t have an easel at the time and had to climb onto a big table, laying the large canvas upon it. Then I climbed onto the table with one leg hanging whilst my other knee propped me up as my face was only inches away from the canvas. It was a back breaking maneuver especially when I painted the rainbow which I did on my first attempt. I must have studied the colors of the rainbow for hours before attempting to paint it. Working passionately daily. the work took me a month to finish.

Enter a world through another's eyes. A world not of distinct images, but of shadowy inhabitants... hints of colors, shapes and textures which can change at any time into something else. A world captured by an artist who paints what he sees, but barely sees what he paints. Diagnosed with a rare eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa at the age of nine, Kontra began drawing shortly afterwards as a way to escape depression. He is a self taught artist and relies on his memory and imagination in order to create his work. Using only his left eye, he must fight through the obstacles of severe tunnel vision, blind spots, blurred vision, painful eye strain and nystagmus (involuntary eye movements). When he paints, his field of view on the canvas is less than ¼ of an inch. In essence, it's like looking at the world through a straw. Some call his art "outsider" since he is self-taught, but others call him an expressionist due to the strong feelings and emotions depicted in some of his paintings. His subject matter includes portraiture, figurative, architectural design, landscapes, fantasy, abstracts and political art. Kontra's work has been shown in group art exhibits at various art galleries and rehabilitation institutes across the U.S., and his solo exhibitions have included Cleveland, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Oceanside California and at the University of Georgia. Originally from Cleveland, he also lived in Maine and in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia. His current residence and studio is located deep in the woods of the Ozark mountains where his creativity is enhanced by wildlife and nature. "Insolence and ignorance shown by others can be the best fuel for fierce determination." D. Kontra "I open my mind allowing my memory and imagination to cut through the blindness in order to create the visions that I see." D. Kontra
