About The Artwork

My theme for paintings at present is underwater animals. But, even though this work's subject is a clione, a sea slug sometimes called a sea angel, the inspiration for this particular work was political! Protests about the 2016 Presidiential election lead to an exhibition, Nasty Women, which was organized to benefit Planned Parenthood. Thinking of comments made by then candidate Donald Trump, "nasty woman" and "blood coming out of her wherever", I wanted to create a painting in red, red for anger, for blood, for alarm - hence the title, "Red Tide". The clione is a tiny creature with wings and horns which seemed the perfect metaphor for women, who are often characterized as angels or devils. I also found in the composition an analogy to female anatomy, but I leave this to your own interpretation.

I grew up in rural Ohio, where in the 5th grade my art teacher began encouraging me to draw. While earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting at The Ohio State University, I was awarded a Ford Foundation Grant. I then moved to NYC to attend New York University, spent a semester abroad, painting, drawing, and sculpting in Venice, Italy, and earned a Master's degree in studio art. The New York metropolitan area has been my home ever since. I now live and work in Yonkers with my husband, John, who provides invaluable support, advice, and carpentry skills.
