About The Artwork

"Reflective," like every painting in the Wear Your he(Art) series is a snapshot of my emotions and state of mind during the process of creating. The process behind the Wear Your he(art) series is as unconventional as the artwork itself. Wearing a single side of a white shirt for the entirety of painting a canvas, I use it as a second canvas, but without conscious regard as to where I wipe my brushes (or hands…I’m a messy painter. It’s all about letting my feelings flow freely onto the fabric. When the painting is finished, sometimes all there that’s there is a mess, but other times the result is surprisingly beautiful. Once both sides of the shirt are filled (meaning I’ve completed two paintings) I stand back and look at it like I would an intentional painting. Does the composition work? Does it need a little enhancement here and there? If it works as a stand alone painting I cut it out, stretch it and voila!…a second painting is born. “Reflective” is one of those surprising gems. Amidst the chaos of colors and shapes you might catch a glimpse of a human figure – a head and shoulders, perhaps. A selection of a pivotal moment in my life…a time of uncertainty and self-reflection. My hope is that you will find your own connection with the piece. Maybe it will stir something within you, evoke a feeling, or spark a memory.

Originally from Texas, George Evan Davis has lived in Honolulu, Hawaii for almost 40 years. He started painting while still in high school in Houston, Texas and graduated from college in 1978 with a BA in Art and Psychology from East Texas State University. After declining acceptance into a graduate program in Art Therapy, he moved to Dallas to pursue his dream of taking the art world by storm. However, after living the life of a starving artist he put his dream on hold and over the course of the next 45 years had two successful careers, one as an illustrator and graphic designer, and one as a massage therapist and body worker. Now, on the precipice of retirement (and no longer starving), he has picked up where he once left off and is following his dream of creating full time. Working primarily in oils and acrylics he has developed a style that, like gender, is fluid and unconfined. Sometimes his work is realistic and representative and other times it’s abstract and the concept defines the process and medium(s). Sometimes he has something very personal or political to say but at other times he paints just for the joy of creating something cool and beautiful.
