About The Artwork

Tokyo without Akihabara would be about the same as Paris without Notre-Dame, or Istanbul without Hagia Sophia. Akihabara is not a just a street, but a whole universe full of electronic lights, a seemingly never-ending jumble of glittering, crackling, running and flashing mostly computer-generated images. Travel guides refer to this bustling place as the beating heart of Japan, a living symbol of this country's Affinität for high speed. And now you are standing there as a totally innocent stranger, dazzled, confused, overwhelmed by the digital frenzy all around you, wondering how is it even possible to live here, in this high-speed land, without going crazy from its frantic rhythm and fuss? And then - you just run away, escape, the way I did - through the first hatch hole you manage to find among allthose neon lights, and then.... Then you realize it. On a street parallel to Akihabara, another world has taken root. In this world, an adolescent beauty would approach you, a little polite smile in her face, to invite you to... Ah, no, not necessairily to what you might think, but - just to sit down with her there, at the window of one of the cozy tea houses, just to take a cup of tea with her, while just admiring together the little paper freesia in the cardboard vase on the toy-like table. Come one, would she probably say, if she could my language, slow down now, and relax, and simple enjoy the beautiful static of the moment. Over the last two hundred years - always the same procedure. And it doesn't really matter that the impressions of these little events today are more likely to be captured in selfies than in ukiyo-e prints, in which the old master Utamaro created the unmistakable female ideal two hundred years ago, to let's it grow straight to the most enchanting trademark of Japan. Today's young beauties are of course no longer dressed in the kimono of the noble ladies of the Edo times, but in the typical uniforms of popular anime heroines, but their delicat goal remains nevertheless the same as in the paintings of Utamaro - namely: to create for you an illusion, to capture the moment, and then, in the inevitable hustle and bustle of everyday life - to let's you enjoy its relative, decorative, perhaps a little bit kitschy, but still healing calm and perfection.
