About The Artwork

This painting entitled “Renaissance after the long night of the medieval period” takes part of the new series of paintings that i’m doing inspired by real historical events. It’s painted with acrylic on smooth linen (90 x 90 cm). With this picture I’m trying to represent the birthplace of the Renaissance movement after the 10 centuries of the dark Middle Ages. The Renaissance, it is argued that is contemporary of the age of inventions and discoveries as América, my intention was to tell it like the caravel Santa María in the direction of the new world (1492). I’ve painted below part of the sculpture of Michelangelo’ Moses (1509), and crowned by the dome from the Cathedral of Florence, designed by (Filippo Brunelleschi), one of the Renaissance’s greatest achievements. In the area at the left, one of the flying machines (ornithopters) called “plane” and designed by Leornado da Vinci that is holding the first pocket-watch ((built by Peter Henlein, 1505). In the centre of the painting, a magnified Moon representing the the discovery of the telescope, invented by Hans Lippershey and improved by Galileo in (1609). A little higher is the comet Halley, the comet’s periodicity was first determined in 1705 by English astronomer Edmond Halley. On the right, next to the lunar surface, I just created a graph with the x/y coordinate system created by René Descartes in 1637. Below and diagonally, I have written the universal law of gravity equation (Isaac Newton en 1687), and finally Orión, one of the constellations observed thanks to the invention of the telescope. Beneath these elements, the painting displays the first supernova discovered by Tycho Brahe (1572). The birthplace of the Renaissance movement while being observed hroughout the night by a avatar characterf from a balcony overlooking cliff-faced mountains topped by some castles. All the these elements represents “the long night of the medieval period” (1000 approximately).

My name is José Galán, I was born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1977. I am a multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes acrylic, oil and watercolour paintings, 3D computer graphics and augmented reality. I began painting canvases and graffiti in 1992, and I have been surrounded by artists, professors and paintings since that time. From 1993 to 1998, I attended the Fine Arts and Graphic Design School “Groc” in Barcelona as a painting and ceramics major. In 2006, I earned a DNAP, at the “École supérieure des Beaux Arts de Perpignan” (France) in Fine Arts. In 2007 I earned a master’s degree in 3D Computer Graphics at the Autodesk Training Center of Barcelona. After working on my own projects for a couple of years, I co-created my first startup, Mars’ Toad, in 2009. The aim of this startup company was to develop different and funny games for iPhone and iPad like Captain Glyph, a fast paced action-puzzle-word game. The project that I am working on right now, called Imaginary destinations is a personal metaphor of the 3D virtual worlds, and was devised with the intention of experiencing in different scales, decontextualizing and recontextualizing real and/or unreal elements; to get into the world of the very small or outsize, modifying the conceptual and emotional contexts of the scenes and elements, changing colors, playing with lighting, and adding life to generate positive synergies. Each piece of work combines at least two or three disciplines or techniques, such as acrylic & watercolour painting, 3D computer graphics, augmented reality and digital photography, and is expected to mark the start of promising new research directions for the next pieces of work.
