About The Artwork

The magic of a summer evening with couples dancing on a terrace, the sultry sound of an alto sax floating on the air. This painting captures the feel of romance, the power of music and the vitality of life. Soft colors of yellow, lavender, blue, white, green and black. Ships rolled in a tube. Must be stretched on a framework of wood. The accomplished writer and musician Bernard Dato has articulated, from his observations of my recent work, an accurate description of my aims and motivation. His remarks are printed in the original French below and are followed by a translation into English. Our gaze is generally attracted by realistic figurative motifs. Maybe because they send us back what we know ( or think we know ) about reality. Look at this saxophone: the light and all its values of shadow and clarity sculpts its forms, translates its material, indicates its weight. We could almost hold it in our hands. Look at this face, worked by time, driven by concentration, filled with inspiration. The muscles in motion are visible. You’d almost feel like you were blowing with him. His inner universe is there, nearby. But how do we get there? This is where William Buffett, in addition to his talent, proves a great artistic intelligence. The inner world of the musician is made up of several types of abstraction. And thanks to the painter it is there; unveiled before our eyes. And it’s the flower pot and the bottom of the wall that makes the transition between our real world and the inner world of the saxophonist. On the flower pot and the wall, the light is more discreet; it distributes fewer values than on the instrument and the face. This less supported realism prepares us for abstraction. Look at the suit. Flat black and white: geometric abstraction Look at the upper portion of the wall. Repetitive patterns: it is a matter of decorative abstraction. And look at the plant now. Like the top of the wall and the suit, the leaves of the plant are not shaped by light; they are simple blocks of color. And the forms they take over the head and over the saxophone seem to be drawn by the music itself; that’s lyrical abstraction. In truth, the scene is seen from both the outside and the inside: the magic of art and the artist’s tour de force. Bernard Dato

A graduate of The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, William Buffett has sold his work all over the world. He is known for his tropical townscapes, featuring palm trees and glimpses of the ocean. As a native of Southern California, he represents these landscapes in a delicate and sensual way with subtle colors and intuitive compositions. After formal training in the arts, he moved to New Orleans to see the jazz players and hear their music. The painting of jazz musicians is his true passion and he seems to capture the sound of the music in his dynamic paintings. A world traveler, he has visited Europe, Mexico and the Far East studying the great art collections. He enjoys success as a portrait painter, designer and printer of limited edition serigraphs and as a widely distributed poster artist, in addition to exhibiting and selling his original paintings. Today his work is in the collections of universities, corporations, and private individuals in America, Europe, Australia and Japan, as well as many islands in the Caribbean and Pacific. He presently lives and works in Nashville, Tennessee and is married to the well known abstract artist and interior designer Brenda Buffett.
