Seine Net Catch Painting

My life for the past 18 years on a barrier island gives me lots of time to be involved with the Sea. I do Sea Turtle Patrol as a volunteer with a local State Park which is ocean side and river beach areas. I also do Horseshoe Crab Monitoring with them. For years before that I spent a lot of time camping on the island North of where I live and we would pull a seine net and it was always quite the adventure to see what you could pull in with it. This is just one example of some of the sea life we found there...best was a flounder which is delicious and so very unusual looking. I created the textures in the painting using gesso as a relief type of sculpture in the water and in the shapes of the fish. It makes it look as if it were painting in a palette knife fashion. Also I used cheese cloth to create the texture of the net. It was a fun painting to do and I hope makes you want to try pulling a seine net. Hint don't get on the deep end of the net.
