About The Artwork

The process of creating such images starts with a variety of sketches, each sketch only containing the boldest lines in the painting. Sketches are then selected to create a polytych piece, or a standalone piece. Broad brush strokes are used to create both the gentle and bold line work, several layers of gesso helps to soften lines. In parts, the layers of plain gesso are coated with gesso tinted with acrylic paint, to add subtle colour. In between layers of brushwork, relief prints are made onto the canvas with Styrofoam engravings. In softening the impressions of the prints, a cushioned material such as Styrofoam instead of wood, and applications of water on the matrix are effective. It is done on the gallery wrapped canvas, with no need for framing, ready to hang and signed on the back. The sides are painted in white with traces of the development of the painting. It is sealed with a satin varnish. * Featured in the "New This Week 6-29-2015"

Hyeran Lee is an emerging artist originally from South Korea, currently residing in Ontario, Canada. Her works are abstract expressionism paintings, often representing an emotional action and an element of eastern philosophy. she is strongly influenced by Expressionism and she uses visual elements to express the relationships of everyday life. Her works open represent two essentials, yet opposing forces of life: the powerful and the weak. They aim to present the characteristics of metaphysical energy, such as flow, movement, freedom, through contrast of value, colour, space, and varying gesture lines.
