About The Artwork

Inspired by a John Currin painting called 3 Friends. His painting was inspired by an old Urs Graf drawing of witches. I was interested in exploring the relationship of the three figures and what their body language communicated. It is painted in fairly thick layers on cement smoothed over canvas so there is a unique texture/surface that make the painting seem older than it is. The touch of flashes, date in the top corner, and abstracted faces in the background brings it into a contemporary time-space that challenges cultural and personal judgement of the female form.
