My work reflects the dialogue between the progression of art history against the natural world which produced the materials it is made from. Fragments, historical sculptures and motifs are reframed – mimicking as we do when curating by placing in a museum, domestic, or public setting – against natural, inhospitable and unforgiving landscapes, reflecting their journey against the constant. New composite scenes are thereby made using spolia from the past, just as historical precedents – notably the enduring theme of classicism – are continually repurposed and reimagined as history progresses. This image crops the fragmentary remains of the helmsman figure from the Scylla group of ancient sculptures discovered at the site of Tiberius’s villa in Sperlonga, near Naples in 1957. The figure is posited in uncomfortable approximation to natural disaster, evoking both the eruption of Vesuvius which wiped out swathes of civilisation and art at Pompeii, and the continuing threat of nature to rebury the art which came from it.

I trained as an art historian, gaining a BA and MA in art history and medieval art history respectively from the Courtauld Institute in London, and write freelance art criticism and reviews for several international publications. I draw upon a long-collected bank of historical images, combined with an analytical mindset honed by research and criticism, to create images that as much scrutinise the re-use and framing of historical imagery throughout time as celebrate it.
