In this painting, the stillness and melancholy of suburbia is portrayed with the sun setting. As the sun dips below the horizon there is a soft glow and a green flash. In the foreground, the soft, amber light from sodium vapor lamps illuminates the tranquil streets, creating a captivating interplay of colors. Towering palm trees sway gracefully in the breeze, their fronds catching the last light of day. A single suburban house, partly concealed by meticulously trimmed hedges is highlighted by faint twilight. It was an image I saw walking at dusk one night in my exploration of the neighborhood around me.

Alex Selkowitz is a fine art oil painter who resides in Los Angeles, CA. After spending decades in the film industry as a lighting technician he has brought his knowledge of light, shadows and composition to his passion of fine art. He is inspired by the bright Southern California light and colorful sunsets. His subjects range from dense urban concrete environments to the sprawl of suburbia littered with green spaces. Common everyday human made objects occupy his paintings which represent the human presence but his paintings typically are devoid of any humans. Painting in an impressionistic style his artworks evoke a calm liminal feeling and a dream like quality.
