About The Artwork

In 'Supper' I bring up the issue of my own immigration. Leaving the southern Polish homeland to the UK to find better prospects in life has turned out to be my life's journey, which has greatly influenced my perception of life and the world. For me, being an immigrant is like balancing between two worlds, the present and the past that had shaped me. It's a mix of different feelings, experiences and contrasting attitudes. It's a fight for survival, a failure and a success simultaneously. My 'previous world' is like a small village at which I often look back. It is continuously submitted to time passing, blurring, forgetting as well as rediscovery, criticism and idealization. This 'village' is both my starting point and destination at the same time.

I perceive the world as an ocean where, below its visible surface, layers of complexity can be found in its depths. Painting, for me, is intuitively diving into and through the ocean to discover new dimensions and planes. It is an alchemic activity where the creative decision-making process and my presence as the artist is evident. My painting is an expression of my particular view, involving aspects of reality, nuanced memories and philosophical contemplations. In my work, I aim to describe the essence of life. Experience, observation and study of the human psyche support my work, I empathize with and give voice to my human subjects. In the paintings regarding time and place, I construct surrealistic locations including abstract elements. Like a frame from a film, the painting is a moment arrested in time. During my creative process, I blur the line between reality and the inner experience of my portrayed models, using symbols, surreal locations and abstract elements. I use diverse layers which often lay on each other, melt and synergize. They also have the role of playing with the viewer, exposing and revealing a story shown in the picture.
