I decided to do this piece of a particular lion whom I had a deep connection with while visiting the LA Zoo. He watched me intently as I moved around the fence surrounding the pen to take photos, but before he had directed his attention to me, he had been crying out at a specific place in the wall that looked like where he would get his food. Upon not receiving the attention he was looking for, he went over to where his mate was resting. While she was lying there, he stood next to her protectively, and again he cried out a mild roar, and although they were located in a small section at the zoo, I decided to create my piece with him out in the wild. I felt sad they were in such a small area, and while my love of animals has always been strong, it grows stronger more and more all the time, especially when such magnificent creatures should be free to roam. One of my hopes one day is to be able to help establish an open range area for wild animals instead of the cramped zoo with a better way for people to view the animals while letting the animals range as they should be able to. I originally came up with the idea of the title partly inspired by an art exhibit I was entering into (which unfortunately has been cancelled), but ultimately because the wild is where these magnificent creatures truly belong, and his roar, while "mild," was something that was such a distinctly load cry that can make you shutter, the cry of a King, one who deserves to be wild and free.
