This piece was my first adult painting, made in around 2009/10, dealing directly with the history of domestic abuse in my family. The title is a double entendre, referring both to the painting process-in which the urge to over-work can often lead to the trampling of the fresh and direct vision that is a huge part of the magic of painting-and the cycle of abuse that often reaches generations deep into families. It takes courage to change patterns, to choose freedom, to chose healing, to chose love...

I work in cycles and series and projects, often several concurrently, compulsively, relentlessly, trying to understand. I understand why they call it a practice now. ... It is the passing that I try to cultivate, the happening of a painting, a sensitivity to the magic of it's appearance, the music that comes through. Synesthesia. ... But there are always negotiations, and so much labor, and guessing, and questioning of intentions: the circles. My art is how I try to handle my mistakes, how I deal with pain and loss and memory, and try to make beauty from that; it is highly analytic, in this sense. ...
