The Dambusters Painting

This painting is part of a series of works on the theme of water. This is the river Loup just down the road from where we live. In the summer when it's boiling hot, the river is the best place to be, it's cool and there's lots of shade. The river is a beautiful place that is constantly changing, sometimes flooding sometimes hardly any water. These are my kids when they were younger. The scene is very contrasted; the dark shade of the river with the over-hanging trees and their skin lit up by the bright sunlight. Painting this was like an abstraction with some parts of their bodies lit and others in darkness and the stones and rocks of the river-bed below the surface of the water. All these just meaningless random changes of colour until viewed as a whole. I wanted to represent the ephemeral beauty of childhood. I feel like I've been this child, these children, playing like this and probably everyone has and knows this pleasure as a child and maybe too as a parent observing
