This painting is a development from a series of works based upon fabric. Painted within the studio using drawings and photographic images it is studied from a real arrangement of fabric. Though colour does not seem apparent it is not a black and white painting (or monochrome). It's been painted using a limited but highly adaptable palette. The subject has been taken from a painting 'The ecstasy of the child virgin' by Zurbaran (Spanish school, 16th century). Though this is not a religious work, it has some connections with this genre, through the motif and the link with an ecclesiastical subject. As with many paintings from the past, drapery is used in several significant ways. To create drama, pattern and illusion. Here it's role is to offer an illusion or 'Trompe l' oeil'. This makes the image seem as if the drapery may be real and enables the painted image to operate as both historically linked and illusory image. Carried out over a month, the painting involved several layers of paint in order to build a strong surface quality to the painted surface. Prior to this many hours were spent arranging and composing the fabric. It is hoped that the viewer would experience the possibility of a meditative and spiritual journey, whilst enjoying the illusiory properties suggested by the subject. It is painted on hand prepared canvas with artist quality oil paints.

I am a painter based in East London (Hackney). I have a small studio and work from arrangements of objects. I usually base my ideas around disposable items, fabric and plastic/containers. Referencing a number of artists from different periods I tend to work from direct observation and use a limited palette. I also sometimes employ and create carefully corriographed photographs and use a camera obscura for compositional purposes. Subjects are selected for their reduced colour. I am interested in ambiguous arrangements of objects and spatial illusion.
