About The Artwork

This painting was inspired by a stroll through the Valencia countryside. The isolated house in the middle of the field, with two solitary palm trees, seemed to me to conceal a terrible secret. The mysterious figure on the second floor came to me after painting the fire. I am unsettled by this figure, which appears very calm and almost defiant in the face of such a threatening situation like a fire. This painting is part of a series called Tropical Metaphysics, which shares the same principles as the metaphysical painting created by Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà.

Klaus Reis (1978, Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian painter and book illustrator, currently living and working in Valencia, Spain. He holds a degree in Fine Arts, a master's degree in art theory, and a Ph.D. in Drawing. Klaus also has worked as a painting/illustration professor in a Fine Art degree. About his work he says: "My work has a strong narrative component and stems from my interest in Brazilian popular culture, specifically the imagery of the Brazilian Northeastern 'literatura de cordel' (originally a rural popular literature genre) contrasting with contemporary urban life issues. Even in my most conventional works, I aim to introduce an element of mystery, create multiple interpretations of the image, and stimulate the viewer's narrative spirit. In plastic terms, I seek to explore a variety of techniques and materials to create my artwork. This includes experimenting with different types of paints, pigments, papers, and supports, as well as exploring both traditional and contemporary painting and illustration techniques. Additionally, I am constantly looking for new ways to construct the image, whether through layering, manipulating textures, or combining visual elements in innovative ways. This experimental approach allows me not only to expand my visual vocabulary but also to discover new forms of expression and convey the narratives I seek to explore in my work."
