About The Artwork

"The Red Boots" This painting is from my recent fairy tale-inspired body of work. It's a contemporary take on the famous Hans Christian Anderson tale "The Red Shoes" in which a girl is cursed to dance non-stop in a pair of red shoes she wore to church one Sunday. In more recent times red shoes have become a highly charged symbol of themes such as rebellion, independence and powerful women. In this portrait the woman is clearly an independent spirit fully in charge of her own feet and proudly wearing her red boots! This portrait is based on a friend of mine who posed for me in her quirky sitting room, surrounded by her books and many eclectic objects she has collected. It was painted in professional quality acrylic paints (Golden Open), on a cradled wooden board and can be hung as it is (or could be framed if preferred). Varnished with a satin varnish to protect from UV light and dust. Will be carefully packed and shipped in a box with a Certificate of Authenticity.

I am a figurative painter based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I'm inspired by everyday experience of life and especially people and nature. My paintings often focus on nature and the way people connect with the natural environment in our modern world, especially those of us living in cities and towns. I think about how important the environment is for all of us, and how the changing environment may affect our future lives. I record my ideas in sketches, photographs or plein air paintings, from which I often then develop larger works in the studio. I enjoy using the physicality and expressiveness of the materials - usually ink, acrylic paint or watercolour - to attempt to describe in visual language those strange or beautiful moments which always seem to elude capture in the written word. I am inspired by contemporary figurative artists such as Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas and Chantalle Joffe, but also by the Scottish tradition of painting including artists such as William Gillies and the Scottish Colourists, especially Cadell for his bold use of colour.
