The Hana Highway is a 64.4-mile-long stretch which connects Kahului to the town of Hana on the beautiful island of Maui. An uninterrupted car-trip takes about 2.5 hours to drive, since the highway is very windy, narrow, and passes over 59 bridges, of which 46 are only one lane wide. There are approximately 620 curves snaking along the route, almost all of it through lush, tropical rainforest. Many of the concrete, stone and steel bridges date back to 1910 and all but one are still in use. Most often a driver must yield to the another driver coming from the opposite direction nearest to the bridge before crossing. To say that this excursion was a unique adventure is an understatement … especially for the driver of the rental car (yours truly!). My passenger seemed to really enjoy the magnificent scenery in every direction while I could only see what was directly in front of me, afraid to take my eyes off the road for even a second. We did stop a few times and took some great photos. The 'Road to Hana' is an adventure that I will never forget. I hope that my first painting in the new "Hawaii Memories" travel series clearly portray that experience.

Art and the natural world have been the driving forces that have shaped Jerrys life and career. Self-taught, Jerry can not remember a time when he wasnt painting, studying art and the great artists, or developing an affinity and never-ending infatuation with the phenomenal beauty of Nature.Collectors of Jerry Sauls work appreciate the fine detail, perspective and imaginative use of light simulation with which he portrays an innate understanding of his chosen subjects. As I see it, the challenge to me as an artist, is not only to paint nature in all her glory and diversity, but also to capture the emotion a scene evokes and incorporate that emotion into the mixing of paint on my palette and into my brushstrokes as the paint is applied to the canvas. Detail, color and texture are as important to my work, as light and the elements are to nature. When planning a new work of art, I like to think about something I have experienced, and how the image can be influenced by natural elements like light and weather. Often, I will begin working with a particular image in my mind, and as I progress, wonderful things seem to happen, transforming my visual image as it is passed onto the canvas. As a result, the completed work is sometimes very different from my original vision.
