About The Artwork

Even if you personally prefer the slim beauty ideal, these three funny, chubby ladies will certainly enchant you. These three young goddesses, were responsible for the observance of joy and cheerfulness in ancient Greece. Aglaia, Euphrosyne, Thalia, - how wonderfully they rejoice, with all their soul, these three Graces, (also called Charitas by the Romans) - that one becomes really envious. Where does one laugh so freely, so heartily nowadays?... But it was not goddesses who were Rubens' models. In one of the graces (the pretty blonde girl on the left, with the piquant dimples, and not only on the cheeks, but scattered all over her voluminous body) the painter immortalized his 35 years younger wife Helena Fourment. The three corpulent female friends are literally bursting with happiness and at the same time challenge us to think about today's ideal of beauty... Do we really get better with a trained and slim body? When Rubens died, three years after the "creation" of his Three Graces, in 1640, Helena not only lost almost a third of her proud weight, but also her laugh, which had already become world-famous at that time. Slender, austere, and suddenly extremely devout, she then began to destroy the lively images of her great husband. How fortunate that the King of Spain Philip the Fourth was just around, and did not let this crime happen. He promptly saved Rubens' masterpieces by buying them all up for his Prado. The gigantic sum of money helped the 26-year-old widow to remarry, but the dimples, ah those sweet, baroque laughing dimples, if we believe the accounts of eyewitnesses, were gone forever....
