This watercolor of Geronimo portrays an Apache warrior who was a Native American resistance fighter in the Southern deserts fighting on two fronts: the Mexican as well as US Army troops. Geronimo was not a Sachem but acted independently in a guerilla warfare of retribution, inspired by the deaths of his wife and children at the hands of American troops. His methods and ferocity were legendary and the word 'Apache' still inspires fear. What I have tried to convey is a man consumed by tragedy without the ability to function except in extreme ways. He was not a Native American leader but acted based on his own stimuli. It was to be expected that one man would arise bent on destruction without the depth of a leader like Chief Joseph on how to deal with an encroaching civilization. This painting finds him war-weary, eyes flickering in hatred and exasperation, a tiny, underfed figure with his finger on the trigger of his cheap gun. Dressed in a yellow tunic with a raggedy red scarf, the prospect of Life was extremely hard and unendurable. Perhaps capture put an end to the demands of an impossible pursuit?

After a fashion design career in New York City, I now paint realistic floral watercolors, and realistic portraits in watercolors, pastels, oil on canvas and digitally tinted portraits. What motivates me to paint Native Americans in this new watercolor collection is the beauty of the true personality and character of a magnificent race of ancient people issuing from pre-history and call doing them justice an awesome honor. In my watercolor flower paintings, I am inspired by the exact luscious realism of Dutch Baroque Flower painting traditions that consoled me throughout my lonely years in boarding school, from which I drew solace in experiencing botanic beauty, elegance, luscious generosity, color, and frivolity, in short, in all things that are out of the realm of a strict upbringing. They still provide glorious satisfaction, even if my standards for classical realism still drive me.
