A woman with rabbit ears is in the throes of birth, but there's no baby. The fox beside her is wrapped in the umbilical cord and gazes impassively at the viewer. The birth symbolizes a pushing out old of old patterns which aren't needed any more. The fox is, despite his apparent ambivalence, part of the process. 'When We Were One' is an introverted piece. It's about the pains and efforts that are caused by emotional growth. The painting is part of a series called 'The Rabbitlady'. The artworks in this series show the journey of a mystical woman as she falls pregnant, has a baby and meets a man. A selection of the pieces feature in a handbound book called 'A Rabbit Reborn', which has been shown at book fairs in Scotland and England (Turn the Page, Platform Arts Belfast, Glasgow Contemporary Arts and the Master Show at ECA, Edinburgh).
