About The Artwork
This painting is inspired by my fascination with contemporary architecture and urban spaces as we consider the importance of sustainable cities. It brings to mind the work of Lyubov Popova and her architectonic series from 1917. Popova was a member of the Russian constructivist group of artists who were striving to create new paintings for a new future. While her peers created paintings intended to evoke a utopia that existed outside of their known reality, Popova remained fixed with creating work that represented the integrated structure of life on the ground. I've always thought that her vision is one we can apply to the present moment as we try to imagine a world where we can live in harmony with the planet and one another.

I am a dual American and Canadian citizen living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia. I hold a BFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, and an MFA from the University of North Carolina. My work is realized through art historical considerations, a feminist identity, and also through personal experience. I came of age in the waning days of hippies and the Vietnam. I have witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rise of global capitalism. I have lived in two countries and traveled physically and psychically to many more. I have faced and survived a life threatening disease. I remember the quaint sci-fi visions of a future that has already happened. I have found solace in the natural world and now watch it dying. All of these experiences are embedded in the work.
