About The Artwork
It was my good fortune to be in Paris when the Picasso Museum was mounting an exhibit that included many works by Alexander Calder, one of my favorite subjects, not only for the brilliance of his work, but also for how people interact with it. In this moment of focusing on an edge of a gorgeous red stabile, a woman appeared in my rangefinder. The result? A figure that appears almost as if an apparition, in soft contrast to the sharp edge of the Calder. To the figure's left is a stark white field. Is it a wall? There is a geometric form, it seems. A window, perhaps? Or not. This is the ephemeral, at times, ambiguous quality I enjoy discovering in the photographs I make because it allows you, the viewer, to participate in the tale, perhaps even to dream.
