I finished covering a press event in central Illinois about health care for seniors and was heading home. There was something magic about the light, the air, the clouds. I decided to take a winding two lane blacktop as long as I could before jumping back onto the expressway. I was hungry and looking for a place to stop when a tiny town popped into view over a short bridge along the banks of a narrow stream. There was a Chicago Hot Dog stand followed by a Chicago Italian Beef stand followed by a local bakery that I could smell as I parked the car. It was strange to find these fast food stands in such a place! Lunch was delicious, just like downtown Chicago. As I walked back to my car I saw these doors being readied for winter. Foil insulation was being taped along the inside frames in this old frame house with fragile looking windows and I wondered how much help that insulation would be. Afternoon daylight made the foil look blue. I composed, shot, then resumed my magical drive home. Back at my desk I tried to recapture the feeling of the day. I made this image into a painting, replacing pixels with brush strokes and sketch marks and designed it to hold up as a large print. One final note...I have looked for that tiny town many times on maps and when driving in that area, but have never found it again.

I was a street photographer responding to lines, color, people and places long before I realized what I was doing or how it influenced the direction my life would take. Grew up on the original black & white LIFE magazine, eager for its arrival every Thursday, instantly studying all the photos. That is where my concept of photography formed and where my desire grew to become a photographer. I worked in other industries yet nothing satisfied me as much or meant as much as taking - making - pictures. I have been a self-taught freelance photographer for almost 40 years. I create original photo art - fine art images - sold from my studio, my web site and through a few select online galleries. Commercially, I shoot environmental portraits, photograph events, and develop documentary projects for a variety of nonprofits, corporate clients, and government agencies. I work as a partner with clients, helping them to maximize the strategic power of pictures. My images are used for PR, communications, image building, income development, and marketing.
