About The Artwork

Originally shot for a travel feature on Bolivia in 2013 but never used by the magazine. Salar de Uyuni is an utterly amazing place, found in Bolivia's Altiplano, it is one of the most extreme and remarkable locations in the world. The vast salt flats, left-over from prehistoric, evaporated lakes, stretch for more than 4,050 square miles and are the world’s largest. The surface layer forms a thick crust of salt extending to the horizon in a polygonal pattern stretching for miles. The harsh and desolate beauty of Salar de Uyuni makes for an incredible perspective altering experience. This image is shot from the Isla Incahuasi or Cactus Island. It is a hilly, rocky outcrop of land and former island situated in the middle of Salar de Uyuni at an elevation of 3,656 meters (11,995 feet). There is a path circumnavigation the island but the elevation makes breathing difficult. Ever since leafing through black and white images of Angkor Wat in my encyclopaedia as a small child I have dreamed of visiting strange and exotic places. I never imagined then that my life would eventually involve travelling the world for travel magazines on commissions doing just that. For me a successful photograph depends upon suggesting a mood or emotion, I'm a romantic in that regard, in that the image should transcend the everyday to produce a visual representation of what I felt at the moment of encountering the scene, finding magic or awe in the moment, whether through colour, lighting, subject matter or composition. My love for travel is matched only by my passion for photography as a medium for expression. It is a craft that I have spent many years enjoying and also teaching to others. Photography can be both supremely simple and at the same time extremely complex and I like the way that it's mysterious in that way. This print comes with a 2” white border on which the artists signature features on the lower right hand corner. Printed on exhibition quality Premium Matte photographic paper, signed and numbered by the artist, this artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity. Your print will be shipped rolled securely inside a shipping tube.

Of his work Gary says; "I see my work as being in the Romantic tradition. My work has been described as cinema-graphic, otherworldly and emotionally charged. I love to take pictures, I'm interested in people, culture, society and a sense of place. I travel a lot and I am a romantic of sorts. I was once described as having a 19th Century sensibility. Maybe that is because I like nostalgia, found things and a touch of fantasy. My aim is to find magic in the everyday."
