Born in 1977 in Tehran, Iran, Kiarash Anvari began his artistic career in 1998 when he started to create and produce short films, documentaries and video art pieces, among them …And I was born to sweet Delight! (2000), I am a Purifier! (2002) and Duet (2006), which were screened and exhibited in prestigious national and international festivals and cultural centers around the world such as Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam and the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Nantes in France, the Kalamata International Documentary Film Festival in Greece, the Video Mundi Film and Video Festival in United States and the Chicago International Movies and Music Festival. His short films were also nominated for several awards at prestigious national and international festivals, such as the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival in Germany, the Palm Springs international Short Film festival in the United States and the Tehran International Short Film Festival. He has also written several successful short films and documentary scripts, including Féminin, Masculin (2007), produced by ARTE and ZDF channels, which was nominated for the Best Non-European Film Award at Grand Off-World Independent Film Awards in Warsaw, Poland and awarded as the best short film at the Oxford Brookes University Annual Film Festival in UK, and La Dernière Scène (2012), which was awarded as the Best Short Film at the Canadian Association of Women in Film and Television Short Film Award. He was selected to participate to the Berlinale Talent Campus in 2004 and had workshops with acclaimed filmmakers such as Wim Wenders, Antony Mingella and Walter Murch. The same year, he was invited to the Berlin Academy of Arts (Akademie der Kunste) Young Artists Residency Program to participate in a series of workshops and screenings of his films. In addition to his film career, he has also been involved professionally in photography and stage acting since 1999 and accumulated experience by working with some of well-known Iranian theatre directors. With the support of the Quebec and Montreal Councils for the Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts, he exhibited his performance art Truth: ordeal and ritual at Montreal Belgo Centre for the Contemporary Arts on January 2014. Another version of this performance art was shown at Tehran East Gallery on November 2014.
