Red is the Color of the Amaryllis by the Graves Photograph - Limited Edition of 1

In an old New Orleans cemetery full of Egyptian obelisks and Greek tombs, a red amaryllis was planted by someone full of hope and love. Although the nearby magnolia tree is alive, the magnolia seems burdened with dutifully sheltering the dead in the crypt it's wound itself around. Green ferns have dutifully filled in the cracks and crevices. But the red amaryllis bursting into bloom nearby is unexpected, and is the only thing electrically alive in this small neighborhood of death. It is fitting and hoped for that it marks the grave of someone who loved as much or more than they were loved in life because "Amaryllis" in Greek mythology was a nymph who fell in love with handsome shepherd, Alteo, who ignored her. Devastated by his rejection, Amaryllis consulted the Delphic Oracle, who told her to pierce her heart with a golden arrow, and then, robed in white, go to Alteo. When Alteo finally opened his door some 30 days later, Amaryllis's bleeding heart burst into a blood-red flower. Here, we feel the excitement of the redness bursting through dappled shadow and shade. The red petal trumpets in a place of death and mourning remind us of the eternal, sustaining power of love, and the valiant determination of human desire.
