Requiem for an Angel In 1964 the world of music mourned the loss of what many jazz guitarists consider the Stradivari of guitar makers. John D’Angelico died. The guitars he left behind a are testament to his craftsmanship and have skyrocketed in value. One of his guitars sold at auction in the mid 90’s for $150 thousand dollars. It is easily worth double today. When I created this image I wanted to pose the model so as to reflect this loss. The strength to endure must ultimately come from within so I decided on an introverted pose for the model. The guitar was placed like a monument standing tall as a tribute to the master luthier. Originally the title was “Melody for an Angel”. Words do not come to me as fluidly as images. Consequently, I was never happy with this title. Three years later while driving home in a cold winter rain the title that had eluded me, that describes the mood and feel of this image, came to me. Requiem, in Websters dictionary is defined as “a musical composition in honor of the dead”. When a D’Angelico guitar is placed in the hands of a musician the sound that emulates from it is in honor of D’Angelicos’ legacy. This is not an inkjet print. It is traditional photographic paper using wet chemistry. The print is then covered with clear lacquer. Then it is adhered to artist canvas on a stretcher frame. Once framed no glass is required as the lacquer will protect the image.
