About The Artwork

This is the wife of a predator who molests women passersby. She is pictured here in front of her apartment building in Dnipropetrivsk, Ukraine (now Dnipro) with other women who resided, in 2007, was a 'luxury' and 'modern' apartment building in that West-Central Ukraine city of a million or more. From this vantage on the porch under a 'portoco', she easily can view her husband pursuing what appers to be his favorite activity -- accosting women and older girl passersby. He very openly approaches pasing females, tring often to touch them,. Most women who have previously encountered him seem to take evasive action on viewing him ahead as they walk to the nearby streetcar stop. Steps quicken; the women veer off the sidwalk and go into the acjacent busy street, ,despite danger from passing cars. Her husband might best described by Western women (men too), as a 'creep' but in the years I observed his behavior, no one, woman or man, seemed to try to interfere with his unwanted action. Women avoiding male predators was common among accosted women, I obseved, when two decades ago,I livedin Moscow. I observed similar beavior in Ukraine even less than five years, however Kyiv has a rising female liberation movement, surely that has spread to distant Dnipropetrovsk. None of the women pictured spoke against such behavior. That includes two of the women by the door; two were buiding receptoin who doubled as guards to prevent drunks, erelicts, thieves and strangers from entering the buildig without resident approval. The buildings 'apartments' often are owner-occupied and n the US might best be called condominiums. Homes differ greatly withsome being art and/or art showpieces while others trend toward utiliarian digs. The 'apartments' in this building often are quite comfortable, some very nice, modern and decorated. Others are more utilitarian. The entrance shown here appaars dowdy to a westerner, but apartment interiors sometimes are luxurious, despite depressing, even ugly hallways. At the fall of USSR in 1991, 'owners/occupants' of private residents throughout Ukraine, Russia, etc., were entitled to ownership of their homes. Ukrainians widely admire and wntto emulate society in Western Europe and the US and longtime ally, Canada. This wife never seemed to seriously or openly object to his aberrant behavior, but trying to discern her innermost feelings might be a fool's errand. Women's attitudes toward unwante sexual advances i former USSR countires appear to be changing, however. There are many cultural differences beween Ukraine, Russia and the rest of what once was the USSR and the United States and Western Europe. . ©2007, image and 2021, text. HCB's s generous, helpful advice also resulted in a career with AP wire service as a world news writer and editor, world service, Associated Press world headquarters, NYC. 6. Michel Karman, Lucie Award photo printer and photo exhibition genius. ent in two 'wars' -- the Vietnamese War, and a prisoner of war taken by Russian separatists in the current Ukrainian--Russian Separatist battles that killed over 10,000 and displaced over 1 million. While writing and as a worldwide photo editor for Associated Press, I was asked to understudy their CEO (worldwide General Manager), to become successor general manager on his retirement, but declined the position.
