With every turn I took in the myriad of paths and alleyways in this covered rural Madagascan market, the relentless bartering between buyers and sellers. Wooden carts with squeaking wheels, rusting scales, precarious shelving, sleeping dogs; this was my kind of retail environment. 'The Trader' is a portrait study of a seller at this most amazing of markets, and who generously give me a few moments of his valuable time away from his stall to be pictured on an adjacent, empty platform. Far from the company uniform or office type clothing we are all so familiar with today, this image reflects a not too distant past when personal headwear was every-day attire for so many labourers in factories, dockyards and construction sites across the world. I've given this image a monochromatic appearance as it compliments both the trader's naturally faded clothing and the aged wood of the environment in which he works.

Photography; it's THE most fantastic medium, I adore it, and I hope this is evident in my work. Born near Winchester in the UK, I've been a resident of London for most of the past three decades. Since June 1983 - when I spent my entire first salary on my first SLR camera - photography has been an intrinsic part of both my life and of who I am. Photography it isn't just about taking great imagery, importantly, it has made me intimately aware of the world around us. As an art-form, photography creates an enormous opportunity to tell a story. Not only can I explore the present, but through montage techniques, as is evident through my exhibition 'Recovering The Past', it enables me to link the past with the present. As an artist, this gives me the opportunity to explore almost anything imaginable. Photography never ceases to excite me, I very much hope that my work does so to you too.
