The bodies of the deceased are dismembered and fed to the birds in a Tibetan Sky Burial. I was captivated by these birds circling at high noon in Lhasa, Tibet. When I followed the birds to see what they were circling, I saw a boulder that was bigger than a truck, and flat on top. When I climbed up, I could see the indents and pools were filled with blood, and there were pieces of clothing, and hair strewn about. I realized I'd stumbled on a Sky Burial. This boulder appeared to have been used for centuries, as you could see how worn the rock was from the cutting implements used. I looked up, and photographed straight into the sun to capture the last bird's flight. As I did this, a spirit, it seemed to me, emanated around and away from the bird, poof! I had this feeling of the spirit moving on as the sky opened up. If you look to the upper left, you can make out the eyes and the arms of this spirit perhaps wafting towards what the Tibetans call Bardo, a transition zone before your rebirth. As Buddhists, Tibetans believe in reincarnation. This large photograph 2' X 3" is a limited number of 108, the number of beads on a Buddhist prayer mala. Archival and museum quality paper and printing utilized:
Epson UltraChrome HDR pigmented inks, and Canson Infinity Baryta Photographic 310 gsm paper. Decorators, other sizes and prices available. Tibetan Blue should be in every setting where calm and creativity need to be encouraged. Artist's Proof #3.

This image, in a series of 4, a sacred number in Tibet, was taken in the highest region of the Himalaya. Each of these 4 photographs was a gift, an unexpected image to appear when I returned home and processed the film. All photographs were taken in the 1980's with Kodachrome 64, the film which records colors most like the human eye sees them. Studies and data have shown that the color blue can double creativity and productivity. It can also have a strong calming effect. I discovered these facts after putting together the Tibetan Blue Collection when I read the best seller IMAGINE by Jon Lehrer. However, my selection of these blue images was purely instinctual and spiritual. Oxygen is a UV filter, and with the low O2 content at high altitude, with less filtering, I feel the blues resonate, and they shift my mind, they transport me.

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I hold some world climbing and skiing records, and made the Olympic Biathlon Team, a combination of rifle marksmanship and cross country skiing. However I consider myself a writer/photographer/author, with about 20 non-fiction books out, for both children and adults. My passion is extreme photography, which shifts my mindset. I have made my way to very remote areas, to capture the essence of a place and it's people, and try to replicate this sense for my viewer.
