This happened in Recife, Brazil. One of the historic buildings was being restored, but the protective cloth had come partially released in the persistent seaside breeze. I waited until the moment when the wrapping and its building made an interesting composition to take the picture. This image was in a special show at the Baltimore Museum of Art, chosen because it resembled one from its collection of historic photographs. Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the greatest street photographers, was a major influence. Life Magazine and the US Government hired some wonderful photographers, including Alfred Eisenstadt and Dorothea Lange, to document important moments and eras in American history. I am indebted to them all. Eisenstadt captured the joy between an American sailor and nurse in an embrace to celebrate the end of World War II in Times Square, and Lange saw through superficialities to the poverty and suffering of families in the Great Depression. The US Government had the foresight to fund the work of artists during these times. Street photography is one of the most demanding genres. The lighting and the subject need to be just right, the time when Cartier-Bresson called “Le Moment Décisif” (The Decisive Moment), that exact instant that tells the story. There is no second chance. My hope for you is that these images may inspire you to see the world differently, to look for the meaning behind superficialities, to make the most of every moment.

Betty Dabney is a retired professor of public health who has been a serious photographer for over twenty years. She has won awards in juried shows, had one-person shows, and exhibited in prestigious galleries. She says, “I strive to capture the essence of a subject, to make it seem more real than reality itself.” There is no formula for her work. The common thread running through all of her work is to evoke a reaction of pleasant surprise, for the viewer to think, “WOW – That is so beautiful!” Her work engages the viewers at a deep level and shows them how to see the world in new ways.
