About The Artwork

I’m pleased to announce the publication of Eye Chart (2019), a fundraising print I have self-produced with Derriere L’Etoile Studios to benefit the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). I’ll be donating 50% of each sale directly to this critically important organization, with the balance covering the production costs. The idea for Eye Chart emerged after the results of the 2016 U.S. presidential election and its immediate aftermath, as well as an ongoing contemplation of the qualities shared by some of the most abominable leaders of recent history—Bashar al-Assad, Omar al-Bashir, Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Benito Mussolini, Vladimir Putin, Joseph Stalin, Donald Trump, and Mao Zedong. My intention was that through the creation of this print something positive could emerge from their visages which could then benefit one of our most important nonprofit organizations, the ACLU. Graphically the work was inspired by 19th century anatomical illustrations, Venetian carnival masks, and the iconic cover designs for George Orwell's classic book 1984. Based on a painting, this four-color lithograph was produced in close collaboration with Maurice Sanchez and his acclaimed lithography shop D.L.E. who worked with me to translate the original image into its final form. Eye Chart, 2019 Four-color lithograph on Somerset Velvet Soft White 300g Paper / Image size: 17 ½ x 9 ¼ inches (44.5 x 23.5 cm) Produced by the artist in collaboration with Derriere L’Etoile Studios, New York Edition of 30 Signed, numbered and dated by the artist in pencil on recto. For nearly 100 years, the ACLU has been our nation's guardian of liberty, working in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and the laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country. With more than 3 million members, activists, and supporters, the ACLU is a nationwide organization that fights tirelessly in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C., to safeguard everyone's rights.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Todd Bradway is a representational painter based in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Pratt Institute and the New York Academy of Art, where he studied with Steven Assael, Vincent Desiderio and Wade Schuman. In 2004 he was a recipient of the New York Academy of Art's Third Year Research Fellowship. Concurrently to developing his studio practice, Todd Bradway has worked intensively at the intersection of illustrated book publishing and the visual arts. For twenty years he worked with Artbook/D.A.P., where he was Director of Title Acquisitions, overseeing the company’s in house publishing program. More recently he was Director of Publishing at David Zwirner Books, which he launched in 2014 as a standalone program. He currently acts as an independent book consultant working with artists, museums, galleries, and publishers, assisting with all aspects of editorial direction, production and distribution. ARTIST STATEMENT Todd Bradway’s psychological, figurative paintings present an evocative world of ambiguous narratives, anonymous, often solemn-looking characters in dark dream like spaces, and haunted depictions of nature. His depictions of figures trapped in moments that they can’t seem to control or under the influence of those who hold power over them, reveal humanity caught in a fugue state. Often caught in open ended, dreamlike states that can be viewed simultaneously agony and ecstasy, entrapment and reflection, these are figures for which we can relate to feel empathy for as we can understand the intimacy of their moments and the weight of their felt losses. Even the simplest of moments, such as those of leisure, are charged with an unavoidable sense of unease. Seen in total, seemingly contradictory states of being are depicted with a secular attitude and unusual depth of emotion. Throughout a dark, even sometimes apocalyptic, view of humanity persists yet the works themselves are rendered in a deeply empathetic way regardless of the violence depicted.
