Family, Construction 35 Sculpture

The invention of new things or situations is valuable only to the extent that they serve to interpret an old--that is, universal--topic of human experience. - Rudolf Arnheim The Construction Series of sculptures explores the expressive potential of form, space and, most importantly, structure by using architectural model-making techniques and materials as the medium for fine art. The series is an attempt to find new form for old content. It is an attempt to express and to interpret universal subjects in fresh, new ways. Construction 35 is an example of that fresh, new interpretation of a universal subject. In this case the universal subject is family. It is strange to refer to this piece as being expressionistic because expressionism, at least in most peoples minds, is associated with strong emotions expressed using wild, energetic, extreme techniques and forms. This sculpture is the opposite of that. It is calm and simple. It uses only 13 pieces of basswood (and some twine). The sculpture represents structural minimalism as fine art (as opposed to being architectural art).
