This is an abstract ceramic sculpture with an emphasis on a variety of glaze textures and techniques. This piece was fired several times to get the finished results, ensuring that the dripping glazes are not too thin so as to ensure a piece that is structurally sound. Many, many decisions are made during the glazing process and require careful consideration with introducing additives to the glaze mixtures. The end result becomes more apparent with each firing, but the final firing where I feel it is finished always offers a few surprises. I can't look into the kiln, so patience has been something I've been getting better at accepting. It really is a new way of thinking about color, the glazes are chalky and dull when applied, they look nothing like what they'll be when fired. I felt this had a very strong resemblance to coral and ocean life, hence the name. Signed on the bottom with a gold luster finish.

I am an abstract painter working in oil, acrylic, and watercolor. I switch between mediums frequently, and I often experiment with a variety of tools. Experimentation and chance have been catalysts toward new bodies of work. My artwork is represented by Unsettled Gallery in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Generally, I have painted in an abstract aerial landscape style, and I tend to favor a bright palette with lots of contrast. My painting process is explorative. I rarely plan a painting. Rather, I begin by making gestural marks. Those skeletal marks influence the direction of the painting, giving the process a beginning. Form is brought to life with the use of color, and I will often give "objects" subtle shadows to convey a sense of depth in my non-objective pieces, hinting at what I like to call "personification of form." A square of color appears to float with a small shadow under it, nearly making it an actual thing, and giving it a personality of sorts. The process of painting involves making these forms relate to each other, becoming a whole painting in the end. Summer of 2021 I began to experiment with music production. I have become intensely interested in how music making is influencing my visual art making capacities. Ideas have begun to percolate and I look forward to starting a new series now that I have released my first album on bandcamp. https://thewomanhuman.bandcamp.com/album/meet-my-monsters mary.robertson.artist (instagram) www.facebook.com/mary.robertson.artist www.themaryrobertson.tumblr.com
