The epicentre of my artwork is the world-famous ancient Greek statue of “Venus de Milo”. The artwork represents the union and symbiosis between wilderness and civilization. A block of marble has metamorphosed into a work of art by human hands. The statue’s creator-sculptor, Alexandros of Antioch, transformed a rock found in nature into an eternal symbol of civilization. Thus, my art aims to show that the wild does not stand in opposition to civilization, but instead they are both manifestations of the natural. The artwork references the birth of Aphrodite/Venus, the mythological goddess of beauty and love. More specifically, the artwork demonstrates the moment Venus emerges out of the sea on to the shores of Cyprus. The rays of light epitomise the light of human civilization that shines all over the world. The natural scenery surrounding her birth is both a symbol of wilderness and of civilization simultaneously. On one hand, the seascape embodies nature but on the other hand, its tame, bilateral symmetry is the result of human, digital manipulation. Furthermore, the dove shown is a symbol of the goddess and is an emblem of hope and peace. Hope for Humanity, Hope for Civilization and Hope for Mother Nature. The dove is an untamed creature that lives according to nature and is free to fly. Finally, the artwork is digital in order to signify the impact of modern technology on art. The digital state of my art also reflects the combination of the old and the new: the metamorphosis of an ancient statue into a modern artwork. Thus, the creative methodology is in parallel with the subject matter of the artwork. However, the controlled process of creating the digital artwork is a sharp contrast to the untamed wilderness.
