About The Artwork

This piece was made in response to the current political, cultural and environmental state of the world. I wanted to show man as both central and vulnerable - his nakedness emphasising this vulnerability, but also reinforced by the collapsing buildings and the cave-dwelling figures in the background. The Green Man, the human personification of Nature, lies crushed underfoot, his outstretched hands tainted with blood - Nature is 'on the ropes'. An ape stretches out his hand in a human-like gesture, a blood-tinged path leads from broken trees, a dead dog lying in its relentless flow. A group of humans stand beyond, corralled by their fear and insecurity in the face of such chaos, clinging together in their united belief against the hostility of the surrounding cataclysm. In such times, people cling to their beliefs, rightly or wrongly, and the world becomes a divided place. And on the horizon, the great black shadow with large white teeth, threatens to engulf it all.... The only hope are the seeds that the central figure lets loose from his hand - the potential for future new growth.

"Although I state that much of my work stems from the imagery thrown up by depression, I would say that it is also the imagery of unconscious connection.Indeed the two are irrevocably entwined. It is no accident that the appearance of animal symbols and the use of bodily products such as hair, urine and blood is also influenced by my former work as a veterinary surgeon. Some time spent in psychoanalysis has helped me to illuminate these connections to find a personal mythology, which I believe connects to a universal meaning of what it is to be human. The `otherness` of animals, their power, vulnerability, unselfconsciousness and instinctual drives, and their relationship with us, are potent symbols of qualities we also have - qualities which we struggle with in our attempts to remain in control of ourselves and our society. It is where these tensions meet that my work is situated." Studio: Sculpture Shed, Spike Island, 133, Cumberland Road, Bristol, BS1 6UX. Tel: (0117) 929 2266; Email: michael.hayter@blueyonder.co.uk
