Henry is a homeless man living on the streets of Cape Town in South Africa. I asked my photographer friend to walk around the streets of Cape Town and take some photos of peoples hands as i needed this for a new painting reference. When he showed me the photos of "Henry" i knew this had to be a pencil drawing so as not to take any attention away from the raw emotion of the scene. Henry posed for my friend clutching onto one of his only possessions, an old necklace made of wooden beads which most people would throw away but to Henry it is his treasure. It's a testimony to the overwhelming homelessness that blankets the city. I purposely faded Henry away more in the background as to accentuate the hands and beads in the four-ground but also make a statement of how homeless people are ignored and cast aside in society just like the beads were probably thrown away and picked up by Henry. My friend gave him some money that day for his time but if i ever find Henry again when i am visiting Capetown i will give him some more from the sale of this drawing. So when we judge them with our eyes, The reason for thier slow demise, For each of them its not the same, A different story behind thier name -Jennifer Bates
