About The Artwork

A winter scene with a road on the brow of a hill, apparently disappearing to we know not where, but an empty, slightly jaundiced sky dominates the destination. A blackened figure, like a child's toy (a 'Mister Man', or some other quasi-human creature - a prophet maybe?), leans out from amongst the trees in the forest that is bisected by the road, possibly pushing over the birch tree on which one of his arms rest. Is he gesturing to something with his other hand, that we might become aware of it? In his pocket appears to be a key.... The forest is dense, and there is the cast-off debris of human life discarded amongst the fallen leaves, including a child's toy vehicle in the foreground. A crushed, dead rabbit on the side of the road lies as testament to man's callous disregard for nature. A small figure, hunched under a tree by the side of the road on the horizon, sits like an observer (and possibly a victim) of this bleak scene. This piece started as an expression of a sense of aimlessness in my own life, but has become an expression of a greater, society-wide anxiety about the destructive path humanity continues to take... A road to nowhere.....

"Although I state that much of my work stems from the imagery thrown up by depression, I would say that it is also the imagery of unconscious connection.Indeed the two are irrevocably entwined. It is no accident that the appearance of animal symbols and the use of bodily products such as hair, urine and blood is also influenced by my former work as a veterinary surgeon. Some time spent in psychoanalysis has helped me to illuminate these connections to find a personal mythology, which I believe connects to a universal meaning of what it is to be human. The `otherness` of animals, their power, vulnerability, unselfconsciousness and instinctual drives, and their relationship with us, are potent symbols of qualities we also have - qualities which we struggle with in our attempts to remain in control of ourselves and our society. It is where these tensions meet that my work is situated." Studio: Sculpture Shed, Spike Island, 133, Cumberland Road, Bristol, BS1 6UX. Tel: (0117) 929 2266; Email: michael.hayter@blueyonder.co.uk
