First off, the Tempera paint used is actually the scenic paint used on stage, in Broadway shows, etc, because it is absolutely matte, with no reflective quality whatsoever. So no matter what your lighting situation, there will never be any glare. Secondly, the subject is my neighborhood, I walk the streets, and suddenly I stop. Something has caught my eye. I look around and see the opportunity for a painting! I am not painting a picture of what something looks like. It's impossible and has never been the point of real painting. The light is changing, in fifteen minutes the shadows are noticeably different. I paint for 2-3 hours at a stretch. So what you see is an accumulation of choices made, and what you experience isn't what it looks like, but what it is like to look. Paintings are temporal artworks, contrary to what you will hear from philosophers. They contain the passage of time. They do not imitate snapshots, or, if they do, they aren't paintings, the aren't artworks. They are painted snapshots, plain and simple. Take your time appreciating paintings, you will be rewarded.

ALL ARTWORK READY TO HANG. I have painted since childhood, when I did not know what an artist was. Even now I am still defining myself as an artist. I have lived in Chicago, DC, New York and Maine, and currently live and work in Boston. I paint from life, in the landscape, before a still life or with a model. The paint is important. I want it evident in the work, not polished over. Brushstrokes and drips tell the story of the making. My work is about looking, not seeing. Looking is making choices, being deliberate. I want to compel you to look at my paintings, not merely to see them. I paint what it is like to look, not what a thing looks like.
